TO say the least the game last night against Washington was not a dominating performance. I pretty much share the observations of Carl Dubois. See Column: Tigers win, but there's work to do .
LSU fans and in fact all fans of BCS teams rant about scheduling some Div II(or whatever we call that nowadays) or anon BCS easy team for the season opener. There are reasons for that. That is for working out the kinks. As we saw yesterday there a few SEC teams and other BCS teams that went against quality opponents and their weakness was fully exposed. That happens more time than not in the first game. However the average fan does not see that when we are playing the Citadels and Miami of Ohio's of the world. So when we get a big exciting game in a foreign stadium two time zones away don't expect it be like we are playing Mcneese at Tiger Stadium.
The less than dominating performance has brought out the Les Miles haters. It shows again it is far better to to be the man that replaces the man that came after the man (Saban). This is true in all sports.
It is truly amazing how these negatigers get memory loss. Does anyone recall when in 2004 the 4th ranked LSU Tigers in the first game hosted IN TIGER STADIUM unranked Oregon State. A game we only won in overtime with a lot of luck!! I will not get into Saban's other uninspiring performances such as against UAB and even Troy. When Les Miles leaves LSU for whatever reason of cause I expect even if the next Coach is worse he will get far less static than Miles.
Oh and now look at the Chavis haters. HE NEEDS TO BE GONE!!! The great message board experts have hardly given any complaints against him since his hire early this year. If he was so bad why didn't you speak up then!!! He was herald as the best thing since slice bread. Typical negatiger stuff.
LSU fans , or at leat the bandwagon ones, very much took Washington for granted. They seemed to have forgot last year in their opener they almost beat BYU which was 15th ranked. BYU won in the last seconds partly because of one of the most controversial ref calls of that Football season. How did BYU do last night? :)
Now last night's game showed we have a lot to work on. But there were some positives. Including the fact that I believe we just one penalty. That is a major improvement. I like the QB play for the most part. I understood why we kept the playbook very vanillia last night. Auburn on the other hand last night against Louisiana Tech seemed to show a ton of theirs.
The defense needs to some work and no I was not pleased with some of the missed fundamentals on tackles. Give Chavis time.
SO lets get geared up for Vandy!!!
P.S if by some miracle Washington beats USC I am going to laugh my butt off. No doubt the bringers of doom and gloom will be back in Miles corner. That is the problem with message board stuff that also feeds the talk radio. People say stuff and then they can go 180 degrees in the other drection months later because well no one recalls your negatiger sentiments.
Maybe the season is going to be a disaster. But to think we can tell anything from this first game is sort of nonsense
Update-
One thing that I did like was the second half!!! THe staff adjusted. It was a completely different game I saw these observations and I will post them in full. I think even the most THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY FAN would have to see merit in this
1) UW did not score in the 2nd half until the 5:24 mark of the 4th quarter. True, they missed a field goal, but that was set up by bad pass interference call on Taylor.
2) Every time LSU's offense sputtered, it involved Jefferson NOT throwing the ball to covered receivers. He either took the sack, scrambled for positive yards or threw it away.
3) After UW's field goal, LSU answered with an excellent drive. 60+ yards in 6 or so plays ... Option to KW left, then Lafell for the 1st. Option again to KW for 8 more, then Jefferson stays in the pocket, looks off receiver, then hits Tolliver. KW up the middle to the 5 yard line, then TD pass to Lafell, Jefferson rolling out of the pocket. Don't know what else you'd want.
More
W was 7 of 9 on 3rd Downs in the first half. That is horrendous (for us). Total was: Third-Down Conversions 11 of 19 By my math .. 4 of 10 3rd down conversions for W in the 2nd half. I'm tellin you LSU played a damn respectable 2nd half; it's just lost cuz the 1st half was not. I'm not saying we dominated, but if you re-watch the 2nd half without suffering throught the 1st, I think some might find a lot of good.
