Do American Protestants and Catholics Practice an Civic Religion?

There is an interesting post at First Things that I hope gets some play. See Advocating a Not-So-Civil Religion. I suspect people will be shocked this is coming out of First Things. I think that is because of a lot of misconceptions about the beliefs of the Catholics and Protestants that participate there and those that are generally fans.
