Since I converted it is amusing seeing how things shift. I can recall a time not too long ago that Liberal Catholics were ranting about the the mean ole Vatican and the local Church was just being oppressed. If only that Pope John Paul the II would quit being such a dictator.
It is amusing over the past year how this has changed. Of course the local Church has changed. More progressive Catholics don't have such a firm grip on the Dioceses as they one had. Now we see the spectacle of this group as to President Obama ranting about the mean ole Bishops and yelling "But See the Vatican Sent Obama a Telegram when he got elected so Obama policies's is no big deal. Why can't you far right Catholic neo con loons be more Vatican like!!!"
Anthony M. Stevens-Arroyo , who for some reason unknown to me , is the main Catholic voice for the Washington Post, goes down this road in his column The Bishops We Need. He is not shrinking violet and compares the Bishops to "Catholic versions of Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney"
Other great quotes
Appearances matter. For instance, take away the charismatic dimension of political conservatism and sunny movie-star Reaganism becomes Darth Vader-esque Cheneyism. I am not alone in thinking that bishops who rule by threat and condemnation erode their pastoral effectiveness. Just as general public has turned off the old Republican Party styles, much of Catholic America isn't listening to the segment of bishops who are following the old playbook. Their stridency lacks a Christ-like message.
Well that is Christ like
