ELTON, La. (AP) — From a small slice of southwest Louisiana, two nations formally proclaimed their friendship in an unusual diplomatic ceremony that is a first for a Native American tribe.
The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana recognized and honored Israel on Monday, becoming the first Native American tribe to sign a "friendship proclamation" with the State of Israel. Leaders of both nations said they shared a common struggle to establish and maintain their sovereign identity and homeland.
A delegation from Israel's consulate general in Houston traveled to the tiny town of Elton to take part in the event, which is designed to open a business relationship between the two nations and to help the Coushattas expand beyond gambling businesses.
