Prop 8 Supporters Blacklisted Is Violation of the Social Contract

I need to start linking Rod Dreher again. He was getting unbearable during the election. But he is supporting JINDAL!!! We shall see how long that last. I like of Rod's stuff be he has a horrible habit of supporting people and when they seem to disagree with him on some issue or does not meet his major high expectations he becomes horribly disillusioned and leaves them on the curb.

Anyway as you might know a Mormon in the arts resigend his job because people were upset he sent money for PROP 8 in California.

Rod has a good post on this at The lavender blacklist. I find this to be frightening in a way. I mean this election season people were balcklisted because they donated to John McCain.

Rod says in part:
So if Shaiman feels bad about it, the blacklist he and his ilk are setting up is okay? What's next? Will all conservative Christians, Jews and Muslims, as well as all social conservatives, have to get out of the arts or stay in the closet at risk of their professional career? (A Christian friend who works in the entertainment industry told me if he had let it be known in his office that he supported Prop 8, he would have been stoned). Will they get around to boycotting newspapers until they fire writers who oppose gay marriage? Where does it stop?

Exactly where does it stop!!! I think most of GOP business friends would never in their wildest dreams fire someone because they voted for Obama or supported issue x. Again in our society where we have to get along things like that are not done.

As a Catholic in Politics this scares the heck out of me.

  1. I see both sides of this query. One, it is scary for people to be "fired" or "encouraged to resign" based on their personal political believe. I do not think that is appropriate. However, As a consumer I want to make sure that my money is going to causes I support and believe in. I believe that a ban on gay marriage is discrimination, so I want to make sure that my money is not going to businesses that will later use my money to propogate their discriminatory agenda. As consumers our money is stronger than our words. I try to avoid spending money at places where employees are treated badly, where animals are unnecessarily injured, where the environment is harmed, and where discrimiation is encouraged. I think we should all put our money where our mouth is and maybe things can change.
