A controversial T-shirt showing a skeleton holding a small child has been removed from Nordstrom department stores across the county after a customer complained the shirt was offensive. Florida resident Judy Carbo said the Affliction-brand shirt depicts a skeleton Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus. She described the shirt as demonic, saying it resembled famous religious paintings. "As a Catholic and a Christian, it was offensive all the way around," Carbo said."If you were Jewish, you wouldn’t want to see a swastika on a shirt," she said. "If you were African-American, you wouldn't want to see anything desecrating you."The devout Catholic said the image on the shirt was offensive enough to say, "enough," so she asked the company to remove it. Nordstrom officials say the shirt has been pulled from all stores, including ones in Phoenix.
There are two Nordstrom stores in the Valley, one at Scottsdale's Fashion Square Mall. The other is at Chandler's Fashion Center Mall. Other Valley stores also removed the shirt from their shelves in recent days. In Scottsdale Fashion Square, clothing store Metro Park had been selling the shirt. But employees were told to take it off the shelves Tuesday and ship it back. Workers at the store say the shirt had been popular and only a few were left out of several full shipments. A spokesperson for Nordstrom said, "The Company empowers its buyers and clearly someone made a bad choice. A mistake was made and fixed."
The Affliction brand is also sold at department stores and small trendy shops around the country. Nordstrom officials said they have pulled two more shirts – nationwide - that might be considered offensive.Affliction did not return calls by ABC15's sister station, WPTV, for comment.
