She had a very good interview with Archbishop Chaput on what sound like a great book he has written called Render Unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life.
Read the whole interview with Archbishop Chaput. by Mrs Lopez
Now this interview should be read with Hugh Hewitt's interview which is very excellent.
Now Hugh was against Immigration Reform however he is not Catholic. Mrs Lopez is Catholic and as the editor of the National Review Online is often the leading voice of Catholic thought on NRO.
Now Mrs Lopez was against in the most vocal manner against immigration reform as proposed by Senator McCain and the very Catholic Senator Brownback.
I did not view it as amnesty but Mrs Lopez did. She was screaming against amnesty and tearing apart those that in her view would compromise on it. Mrs Lopez is against amnesty. Well she is not against the amnesty that as a good Catholic she gets from Jesus Christ.
When you think about it immigration reform and the amnesty that Lopez so hated it is much alike.
In confession there are conditions and there is penance one must do for the great amnesty of absolution to take effect. Same with proposed immigration reform.
Anyway the great Archbishop Chaput that so many Catholics rightly think is a great guy got a ton of grief for trying to find Christian based solution to immigration reform. Mrs Lopez was silent on those attacks.
Much like she was silent as many to many of us Republican conservative Catholics that supported immigration reform that were called traitors, open border advocates, and quislings. It was to say the least a hurtful experience for many of us. It was ironic that many of us found a more Conservative Catholic voice looking for sanity on this tough issue in the Jewish Radio talk show host and commentator Michael Medved. That was not available at the National Review and it's Catholic University grad editor in Chief Mrs Lopez.
Is not immigration and other issues of Catholic Social thought contained in his book? If we are talking about Citizenship does anyone besides me find it out that one of the biggest Catholic Social Justice of the this century that involves Citizenship, Catholic in the Public square , and the granting of POSSIBLE Citizenship was just sort of ignored. I mean McCain was all for it so isn't that good PR for him as to Chaput's views?
It would seem that Chaput's view and as Bishop of a state that has a huge Hispanic population would be interesting. Lopez took a pass.
That was noticed by a few of us that have still have wounds from that battle.
Lopez at times has had to take a stand. For instance when Tom Tancredo attacked the Pope from the secular hallowed halls of congress. If you are leading Catholic voice at NRO then crazed attacks from even your friends against the Holy Father cannot go unchecked. I liked Mrs Lopez that day. She was a voice of sanity that recognized that this was a tough issue. However it never occurs to her that she played some small part in the beast that made that KNOW NOTHING episode out of the 1800's occur in 2008. I think she spoke up one time when Krikorian had some crazy theory about how Mexican immigrants could not be trusted because they wer 100 percent pro Israel or some other lame theory he is proclaiming that day.
However when Lopez was not attacking Huckabee for speaking at a Church that was not exactly singing the praises of the rosary she was laying bed with folks that attack Holy Mother Church on the most wildest of conspiracy theories on this issue.
One of the leading people that is in this crew is Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. He is major contributor to NRO Online. In a interview conducted with him here at Fence Me In: Tackling immigration.
Lopez: How does one get to be “the nation’s most frequently quoted immigration expert”?
Krikorian: By writing for National Review Online.
Lopez: Good answer!.
Again let me remind folks that Lopez is Editor of NRO. She did not find it prudent to put a conservative voice , Catholic or not, as a regular devil's advocate to the "Its Amnesty" (cue dark music) that she and others advocated almost every day during the heated battled over that very tough issue.
People of good faith can disagree over the various tough issues of immigration reform and illegal aliens. However the irony of today and looking at these interviews cannot be passed on without commenting for some us.
I understand what this article is trying to get across and it is important. Still there is a incredible irony. SO for all those that rightly hold McCain feet to the fire on pro -life issues. Just perhaps consider other voices should be held to the fire.
