This is a very interesting article he did over at the First Things blog Thoughts on “Roman Catholics for Obama ’08”
Pro Ecclesia has commentary here at Archbishop Chaput: Thoughts on “Roman Catholics for Obama ’08”
It is a good read and especially this part:
But [Catholics who support pro-choice candidates] also need a compelling proportionate reason to justify it. What is a “proportionate” reason when it comes to the abortion issue? It’s the kind of reason we will be able to explain, with a clean heart, to the victims of abortion when we meet them face to face in the next life—which we most certainly will. If we’re confident that these victims will accept our motives as something more than an alibi, then we can proceed.
Ahh that is the clincher. I have gotten used to to the fact that the whole "proportionate" reason that supporters of Obama are pretty much hogwash.
Lets face it. Let us say that Senator Brownback had gotten the Republican nod. A Person that the Cardinal of Boston said "There is no other presidential candidate in the U.S. today that more reflects Catholic social doctrine as you do." Does anyone think that these people making the Catholic Case for Obama would be over there getting the vote out for Brownback? I am pretty sure we would indeed be hearing about
"proportionate reasons" to support Obama over Brownback.
I have only voted for a Pro-Choice person over a "supposed" pro life advocate of the Unborn. That was when I had to vote for Edwin Edwards over the racist David Duke.It is indeed rare.
The Cardinal might be onto something re: Brownback. Maybe McCain would do well to pick Brownback as a VP to win over Catholics, which make up a good amount of voters the swing states of the US.
