This is so sad and makes me mad. Full Circle has the link to the Houston News Story as well as commentary at Houston church deceiving Catholics and the necessity of rebaptism (there is a vid)
Let me say I doubt that is some legit Anglican Church in the Catholic tradition either. I can't imagine they would do that. From the above picture too you can see that this is not some small operation either. If one was to closely examine their web site then one might have a clue something was up!! Still it is deceptive!!! What a shame. I hope they get their souls right with GOD!! MY commentary after the article
From the news article:
HOUSTON -- Misahel Lopez Jr. is allowed to play with a lot of things, but never with his faith.
His father is a devout Roman Catholic, and his dream is simple: for junior. to grow up a good Catholic boy.

That’s why the Lopez’s youngest son was baptized at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew in North Houston three years ago.
They were told the church was Roman Catholic, and the service is word for word that of a Roman Catholic Mass. Pictures of Pope Benedict XVI adorn the walls
But after the Lopez family attended Mass for months, they noticed something strange, and it made them suspicious.

The priest had a wife and children — something the Roman Catholic church forbids.
So they brought their concerns to Roman Catholic Priest Miguel Solorazano.
“They hook you up by saying, ‘this is Catholic, this is the same,’” the Rev. Solorazano said. “But it’s not the same. It’s not a Roman Catholic Church.”
Misahel Lopez was so upset that he didn’t set foot in a church for three years. He felt cheated, hurt and guilty for baptizing his son in a different denomination.
He’s not alone.
11 News obtained certificates of first communion certificates bestowed at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew. None is recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, so 11 News showed them Monsignor Frank Rossi.

So many people have talked to Roman Catholic priests about this that the Rev. Solorzano came to a disturbing conclusion.
“They target the newcomers, the immigrants — those who speak Spanish,” he said.
He said immigrants usually don’t ask questions to avoid bringing attention to themselves.
So 11 News started asking. No one from the Cathedral of Saint Matthew would talk on-camera.
Instead, they sent a fax titled“Questions and Answers about the Cathedral of Saint Matthew being Catholic” that said this:
Question: “Do people think you are a Roman Catholic Church?”
Answer: “Someone might at first mistake us…we announce in most of our services we are not Roman Catholic.”
But when asked, a great majority of church members told 11 News that the church is Roman Catholic.
The sign outside the Cathedral of Saint Matthew says it’s Anglo Catholic, but its own Web site reveals much more.
At one time the church was a non-profit organization that mailed out prayer letters and operated out of a P.O. box in Tulsa. They filed tax returns with the IRS.

But after a legal battle with the federal government, the non-profit was ruled a church for tax purposes, and churches don’t have to report a dime to the IRS.
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has heard from dozens of disenfranchised believers - some of them couples who tied the knot at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew only to find out their marriage is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.

They may certainly be valid civilly if we have a civil marriage license,” Monsignor Rossi said. “They may be valid in that denomination, but they are not going to be valid for Roman Catholics.”
Perhaps the saddest part of this story is what can never be.
The Lopez family is yet to return to any church. While they would like Mishael to grow up a good Catholic boy, only a re-baptism by a real Catholic priest and in a real Catholic church would convince them to go back.

“What I’m saying, what the archdiocese is saying [is] we are here for you,” Monsignor Rossi said. “We don’t want you to feel guilty. We don’t want you to dwell in the past. We want you to come home.”But now, that’s impossible. Roman Catholic priests cannot re-baptize a child who has already been baptized in another church.
The Tulsa Better Business Bureau has also received dozens of complaints, and the Cathedral of Saint Matthew has responded to none of them.
Documents obtained by 11 News give us an idea about the size of this church. In 2005, about 26,000 people attended Mass.
Just a year later, the number grew to about 62,000.

May I ask what in the hell the Archdiocese of Houston was doing!!!! Maybe a lot. But looking at the photos it seems the word DID Not get out!!! How in Heavens name are we going to prevent poaching of Catholic Hispanic Immigrants by Evangelicals if in this case the majority of these poor immigrants had no clue they were not at a Catholic Church. Again this is not a small operation. Did the Diocese take out ads in Spanish media and the Spanish radio to alert folks to this? What is going on!!!! I mean perhaps we should just sign up Hispanics immigrants for the new Pentecostal Church down the street since it seems we are don't give a big darn!!!
American Catholics have a responsibilty to see that this does not happen. The Church was the foundation and safe harbor for millions of Poles, Irish, Germans, and Italians among many others when they immigrated here. I guess I am more upset that those of us whose ancestors that benefited from tht are not doing our doing our part now.
May I suggest concerned Catholics call this office to get some answers

ReplyDeleteIt's been a long day (and week).
I'm going to look into this and get back to you before I blog about this. I'll send you an email so you can report on it and I'll follow up with a blog posting.
It'll take a weekend or two for some investigation.
I've heard of this before around the archdiocese but I didn't realize the gravity until I came across your posting.
Keep up the great blogging.

Thank. i Guess I am just shocked how big this Church looks like and how many of these fols thought it was a legit Catholic Church
ReplyDeleteThis church has long been known to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I was on the evangelization commission of the diocese for many years; we often talked about the need to do something about such dishonesty (and also by Lutheran and Methodist churches that advertised "Misa en Espanol" or had pictures of Guadalupe), but all we could do was advise, and the higher ups didn't see a need to do any publicity on the issue. We specifically looked into this church, and researched it about 2006; told the higher ups of our concerns, but they chose not to do anything proactive.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the following link - it confirms that S.Mathew's Cathedral is part of a scam: http://www.houstonpress.com/2007-03-22/news/saint-matthew-s-churches-inc/ - certianly not a legitimate Anglo-Catholic parish of the Episcopal or Anglican Churches.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, just because the Roman church thinks it can coop the name Catholic, does not make it a fact. The TRUE Catholic Church is Roman, Anglican and Eastern, commonly called the Greek side. Roman Catholics MUST learn what Catholic means before they start criticizing others for their own authentic use of the word. It makes the Church look foolish when they criticize out of ignorance.
ReplyDeleteNow, on the other hand, if the church there actually told someone it was ROMAN Catholic when it was not, then that is definitely wrong and a criminal case of fraud. Though I would suspect that with the language barriers, when someone said their church was Catholic, the new immigrants ASSUMED they meant Roman Catholic. This is the fault of the Roman church in using the word Catholic so much to describe only their part of the Church Universal(Catholic.)

I did some research on this operation after receiving one of their letters. I agree that their "catholicity" is a sham, a scam, a satanic mockery of the historic universal Christian faith.
ReplyDeleteAnd I write this as a Lutheran with a high regard for catholicity which, I believe, is not limited to the Roman Catholic Church. But that doesn't change the fact: however you define [small c] catholic, "St. Matthews" is a mockery of it.
I actually am White-Euroopean and i baptized my children at this Church, it is a great Church, there are hardly any whites at this Church and all sunday masses are in Spanish. this is basically a Latino immigrant Church, all of the fathers and everyone who works for the Chrch is Hispanic. So whoever wrote this article is freakin nuts and out of their mind and completely wrong because this church is an Latin-immigrant church.
ReplyDeleteI am a member of this church and the Fathers of this church have NEVER ONCE said they are roman catholic! They have thoroughly explained who they are, the differences between the two and WHY. I have attended their spanish mass and its explained at the beginning. I attend their english mass and they explain each time we have newcomers, new visitors for the first time. They charge NO fees for weddings, baptisms, quinceneras, etc, like the roman catholic does. They dont make profit from their members as does the roman catholic. My godsons family had to cough up $130 to be baptized. We had to BuY the candle FROM THEM. All about profit if you ask me. Im extremely happy we found Cathedral of St. Matthew
ReplyDeleteI live close by this church and have toured the facilities but am not a member. If nothing else, this blog deceives others into thinking this church is misrepresenting itself. Near the entrance of the church is a sign that announces it is Anglo-Catholic, and this information also appears in bulletins and other published materials. How is it that Mr. Lopez overlooked this plus other signs such as the fact of the priest being married? Surely during the instruction he received prior to his son's baptism he was informed that this is not a Roman Catholic church. So if he chose to ignore these signs or simply overlooked them is his own fault.
ReplyDeleteNow, I do give this church credit for attracting a large group. When you drive by, they have large banners and signs announcing services. They advertise first communion and confirmation classes and if you go on their website or visit them, you can see the large number of children who participate. I've never seen an RC church advertise in this way or make such a wide scale attempt to evangelize.
ive been a member at this cathedral for more than 5 years.
ReplyDeletei got married and i baptized my daughter at this cathedral, and since the first time i went to mass they always explain after mass that they do not form part of the archdiocese of galveston, that all the fathers are married, that they are NOT roman catholic, and that they are anglo catholic and they say it in SPANISH at the spanish mass and in ENGLISH at the english.
every time you need a service like a baptism you have to go to some classes and once again they explain the type of church they are.
And for those who think this is church full of immigrants are wrong, yes most of the members are hispanics, but this cathedral is located at a hispanic populated area.
If those in leadership at this church are so clear and upfront about who they are, why does a significant portion of the congregation evidently not know?
ReplyDeleteAnd for those congregants who do know that this church isn't Roman Catholic, why would they want to be a part of an "Anglo-Catholic" church that only mimics the Roman Catholic mass and sacraments?
I went to one of their huge quincinera celebrations and they have something in their bulletins that says it's Anglo Catholic, or Anglican. Whether or not the people understand what that means is a whole other thing. Mostly, I think the parishoners don't care. In any case, it's a nice church with nice people. What's funny is how they have such a huge following while Roman Catholic churches nearby are failing. This church reaches out to people and goes out in the community. They advertise faith formation classes with huge signs. They appeal to peoples' faith while the nearby RC churches sit and wait for people to show up.
