An Italian convict allowed to attend a papal audience because he was considered a "model prisoner" took advantage of the kindness of his captors to disappear, a report said.
Angelo Di Gennaro, an inmate at the Castrogno di Teramo prison in central Italy, travelled on Wednesday with three other "model prisoners" for an audience given by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican, ANSA news agency reported.
Although he had been allowed to leave the prison on numerous occasions in recent months and had never gone missing, Di Gennaro went missing while in Rome and was still to be found, the authorities said.
