The Pope Talks ABout Sports and Our Blogging Catholic Football Player Chalks up Another Win

Update- For God , For Country, and For Yale has an entry on the game.

For God, For Country, and For Yale appears to have got another victory on the Ivy League Football Gridiron. He has not updated yet but this article gives the details. Check his blog during the day as he tell us the "inside view". I was thinking of him as well as these two players as to the Pope's recent remarks on sports. Those players that played out that dramatic struggle in Tiger Stadium this Saturday are

LSU's Jacob Hester

Florida's Tim Tebow
Both are fine examples of Christian guys showing what sports is all about. They are not alone.

Anywho the Holy Father addressed this topic this weekend when he is addressing the Austria National Skiing team.

If I can find a full English translation of the address he did , that was in German, I shall update the link
Here is what he said according to this news report:
Sports stars can be role models for youths, pope says
By John Thavis
Catholic News ServiceVATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI said sports stars can be models for young people, but only if they remember that winning isn't everything."In the practice of sport at every level, one needs to preserve the inner harmony between body and spirit, and avoid reducing sport to the search for results," he told members of Austria's national Alpine ski team Oct. 6.The pope said that when practiced with the right spirit sports can help promote human development and lead to the discovery of individual capabilities and talents. Human dignity should always be respected in these sporting activities, he said.

Sports figures remain models for youths, he said, and therefore should exhibit the virtues that are associated traditionally with athletic contests: determination, a spirit of sacrifice, and inner and outer discipline, as well as respect for opponents and an awareness of one's own limits."At a time when there is a loss of values and a lack of direction, athletes can offer strong motivation to struggle in favor of good in various contexts of life, from the family to the workplace," he said.

On Oct. 7, the pope greeted young Rome sports activists who gathered in St. Peter's Square for a blessing after Mass. He told them to keep up their efforts to unite sports, friendship and spirituality.
