Louisiana Catholic Blogger Update For October 4th

Grand Coteau Catholic Church, Grand Coteau, Louisiana This Church and school is the only site in the United States where the Vatican recognizes an actual Miracle took place. The Sister that was attributed with this miracle is now a Saint. The School located here was founded by her: Saint Madeline Sophie Barat. Saint Madeline Sophie Barat is the Founder of the Society of Sacred Heart around 1800 in France. St. Madeline Sophie was educated by her brother during times when women were not educated. It became her vision to educate young women and with the help of Mother Eugene Aude' and and Sr. Mary Layton they traveled to Grand Coteau, Louisiana and opened the doors of the School in October 1821. None of this would have been possible without the help of Mrs. Charles Smith, a wealthy widow that financed their dreams

This update will be a very small one today. It is either feast or famine with Louisiana Catholic bloggers depending on the day :)
Catholic Tube has a very interesting post here. Being in the Southern United States I am pretty clueless what is happening north of the border. He has this nice vid called Salt and Light Television. The description is :"Born in the wings of World Youth Day 2002, Salt and Light Television continues to renew, educate and evangelize the Church of Canada and around the world. This six minute presentation highlights some of the very best of Salt and Light Television since its conception." Check out this cool vids on St Francis he has at The Prayer of St. Francis and St. Francis of Assisi. He has a good Pro-life anti abortion vid here at 40 Days For Life - Day 8.

From The Recamier has a nice post as usual today. She hit on a lot of what happened today in hisotry, who died on this date, etc in her daily post. She has a lot of info on
Woody Guthrie that is very interesting. Also she has a very interesting book review she did at her post Constantine’s Bible: Politics and the Making of the New Testament by David L. Dungan Be sure to check that out.

Thoughts & Ruminations from Fr. Ryan has several good links and post today. Go and and see his links Hillary wants to give science absolute freedom; restraint from moral norms... , Australian bishops urge break with Amnesty International, The Dutch and the "Spirit of Vatican II"

The Brown Pelican Society as Usual has a ton of post up. They are:
Where Is the Line? Choosing a Pro-Life Presidential Candidate( I disagree with Perkins here for reason I have blogged about before. Now he is head of a non GOP group. That is non partisian. However if Primary voters decide for the good Mayor of New York I will fight like hell to keep the party pro-life and get a Pro-life VP for the GOP ticket.)
Political Correctness! President Bush Hosts a Muslim Religious Observance( I don't see what the big deal is. This had nothing to do with PC)

  1. The church in the photo is St Charles Borromeo in Grand Coteau. It is the parish church for the Sunset and Grand Coteau area. As far as I know, other than being the parish church, it has no direct official relationship with the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau. I presume that the Academy has a chapel on campus. The church was established many years after the Academy was established.

  2. The nuns over at the Sacred Heart Academy have the room preserved where the miracle took place; if you go over, and ask nicely, they are more than willing to show it to you.

St. Charles Borromeo is a pretty church, and quite historic, but as David points out, it has no connection to the miracle over at the Academy.

  4. I thought I had a photo of Fr. Sherman's grave on my hard drive, but I can't find it (I do retreats dowwn at Grand Coteau, at Our Lady of the Oaks, twice a year).

However, if you go to http://lifebread.blogspot.com/
and page down, you can find a very nice photo of Fr. Sherman's stone.

(And ask me sometime about Cornelia Connelly; two of her children are buried in the old cemetary.)

  5. There is a shrine at the Academy where the miracle occre. There is also a museum that has the original furniture that was in that room at the time and a lot of other cool historic items. Just go to the front desk and ask Ms. Laura. She will find someone to take you up there.
