Quite a discussion has broken out on my LSU sports board. It all revolves around Pentecostals and speaking in tongues. It has got quite testy. Several Catholics jumped in to denounce it.
Louisiana has a huge Pentecostal influence. In the part of the state where I am at(which is pretty Baptist) it is not huge. However once you start getting to toward the Central part of Louisiana it become big fast.
I have never spoken in tongues or had many of the experiences that people have. I do think there is something to it thought. However it must be discerned. About a week ago the popular priest blogger at Standing on My Head had a discussion on this. Now there was a comment that was interesting. It is a anonymous commenter so take it like you will. But this is not the first time I heard this:
As a lifelong Catholic I can see how the charismatic movement meets a need in the Church (although it does not appeal to me in the slightest). At the same time though, one wonders about the potential issues that can come up from unsupervised charismatic gifts and miracles. As Father Longenecker points out, movements like the Toronto Blessing, clearly indicate the devil's hand. Whenever I come across a charismatic group I am reminded of a story that a friend of mine, who is now a priest in my diocese, told me about his experience with the charismatic movement in Setubenville. During a charismatic service, a girl began speaking in tongues and was clearly moved by the spirit. After the service, and with my friend watching, an older professor went up to the "tongue speaker" and asked her what languages she was fluent in. She responded that she only spoke English, but that she had been speaking in tongues throughout the service. The professor sternly informed her that she had been speaking Italian, and that she had been profaning the name of God and the Saints. Screwtape surely had a laugh at her expense.
Now does that mean this movement is not from the Lord if this really occurred. NO!!! . Again Discernment is the issue.
As I pointed out to the Louisiana Catholics, there is a huge Catholic Charismatic movement in our state. Here is just one place where that is happening.
One final point. It should be remembered that the Preacher to the Pope himself is a part of this movement. You might enjoy reading this short interview he did called No Need to Fear Charismatic Renewal.
