Today was the Feast of St Lawerence. St Lawerence was one of the early martyrs. He died within days of St Pope Sixtus II in 258. St. Ambrose of Milan (+397) in his writing De officiis ministrorum writes briefly about the martyrdom of these two men. It is a very compelling and gripping piece of writing that bears witness to the days where Popes and average Christians alike were killed for the faith of Christ. Pretty compelling. Whenever I read accounts like that, I wonder if my faith would meet a test like that. I hope it would. But like the guy said in the movie Bridge in the River Kwai when asked if he had to kill with a knife in cold blood if needed , you never know till you are in that situation.
