The Catholic Word for Today-Sedevacantism

What is a Sedevacantism and who practices it?

That pic about sums it up in my view.

These folks are more Catholic than the Pope because well according to them there is no Pope. All the Popes we have had after Pius XII or earlier have been frauds and imposters. Some of these people go further off the deep end and elect themselves Popes. Truly!! I am not joshing here .In the United States we have two of them that issue Papal decrees all the time. They spin all sort of conspiracy theories such as every Pope recently have been secret Masons and similar nonsense.

The BOB CATHOLIC Show blog appears to share my interest in these folks as his recent post here shows.

First lets look at some at a little triva. This word might sound familar to some because of the press coverage of John Paul the II death. During that time we had no pope( called the interregnum) because well obviously the See was vacant until Benedict's election. Wilki has a good page on this and states. The term "sedevacantism" is derived from the Latin phrase sede vacante, which literally means "while the seat is vacant", the seat in question being the official chair (or see) of a bishop (referred to also as his cathedra). The phrase thus refers to a vacancy of an episcopal see.

The difference is that if people who believe in Sedevacantism had a post office they were be issuing this stamp right now. That beautiful stamp as you can see has the Holy See Coat of Arms that is used during this time period. That can be seen at the Wiki page I linked.

In the end this is a serious business. Any movement that teaches error is serious stuff. There are a segment of Catholics that have legitimate gripes that fall into this nonsense. The Wilki page has some good resources on refuting this.

I also ran across this insightful two part post from a more "traditionalist" point of view.
