What does "Catholic" US Senator Mary Landrieu Think About Catholic Bashing Ads running in North Louisiana?

Updated-See Bottom
I would like to know. She has a election coming up next year and must be thanking her lucky stars that Jindal is running for Governor and not against her. In fact if the very smart and political savvy Louisiana State Senator Lydia Jackson had not pulled Mary's fat out of the fire(Landrieu's Primary Campaign was a disaster) she would have lost North Louisiana and we would have Republican US Senator Suzie Terrell today.

I think this is a question we should be asking her. Especially as she starts parading those "Catholic" credentials around.

In fact what does Louisiana political guru to the stars James Carville think? Is not like his uncle Vicar General of the Diocese of Baton Rouge?

Revolution 21 has a great post how Carville who is "writing from his heart and soul" is asking us to support her in her re election next year. Maybe Carville can tell us what she thinks about ads that indicate that the state democrat party thinks we are a bunch of prejudiced yahoos in North Louisiana.

Update-
It appears a Catholic Group is calling on Mary Landrieu to denounce this nonsense.
Fidelis today called upon on Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, a Catholic Democrat, to denounce an anti-Catholic smear ad produced by the Democratic Party of Louisiana. The baseless attack ad insinuates that Bobby Jindal, a Catholic Republican candidate for Governor, is somehow prejudiced against Protestants. In a two page letter sent Wednesday, Fidelis called on Sen. Landrieu to demand an immediate retraction of the ad. In the letter Fidelis President Brian Burch wrote, “The recent television ad produced by the Louisiana Democratic Party falsely accuses gubernatorial candidate Bobby Jindal of religious bigotry …[and] of criticizing Protestants. In essence, the ad hopes to characterize Rep. Jindal’s Catholicism as a black mark on his character and an indicator of his unsuitability for office. That a state party would employ baseless attacks pitting Catholics against Protestants recalls a dark chapter in our nation’s history when such bigotry was considered acceptable.”The ad specifically accuses Jindal of “insulting” Protestant religions. The ad takes words written by Rep. Jindal thirteen years ago in the Catholic publication New Oxford Review, and places them horribly out of context, twisting their author’s clear meaning in order to demonize him for their target audience. Finally, the ad attributes to Rep. Jindal words that he merely quoted, and that were originally written centuries ago by a Protestant reformer.“The Democratic Party of Louisiana is busy raising money to put this false ad on the air in markets with lots of Protestants, and purposely distorts Bobby Jindal\'s words in order to make it appear that he was insulting Protestants. This false attack ad was designed to breed division between Catholics and Protestants and should be taken down immediately,” said Burch."Senator Mary Landrieu is a unique position, as a Catholic Democrat and a leader in Louisiana politics, to request that the Democratic State Party of Louisiana remove the ad and apologize to Bobby Jindal and to Catholics across the state. We trust she will act quickly to end this untruthful and divisive ad,” said Burch.A copy of the smear ad is currently available on YouTube at http://youtube.com/watch?v=SEAsUtvDEaw

### August 22, 2007VIA FACSIMILEThe Honorable Mary Landrieu Hale Boggs Federal Building500 Poydras StreetRoom 1005New Orleans, LA 70130Dear Senator Landrieu:I am writing today to urge you to take immediate action to stop the hateful and bigoted attacks on the Catholic faith of gubernatorial candidate Bobby Jindal. While I understand Mr. Jindal is not of your political party, I believe your leadership as a Democrat in Louisiana , and most importantly your own Catholic faith might prompt a needed response to this truly shocking attack.

The recent television ad produced by the Louisiana Democratic Party falsely accuses gubernatorial candidate Bobby Jindal of religious bigotry. In fact, this ad is itself nothing more than an open display of the very bigotry it attempts to ascribe to Rep. Jindal. In the ad aired in the predominantly Protestant parts of Louisiana , Rep. Jindal is wrongly accused of criticizing Protestants. In essence, the ad hopes to characterize Rep. Jindal’s Catholicism as a black mark on his character and an indicator of his unsuitability for office. That a state party would employ baseless attacks pitting Catholics against Protestants recalls a dark chapter in our nation’s history when such bigotry was considered acceptable.Senator Landrieu, we ask that you demand the immediate retraction of this ad. Besides being insulting, discriminatory, and an assault on religious freedom in Louisiana and in America , the ad is simply false in its accusations. Rep. Jindal never once made mention of the denominations mentioned in the ad.

Moreover, the ad takes words written by Rep. Jindal thirteen years ago and places them horribly out of context, twisting their author’s clear meaning in order to demonize him for their target audience. Finally, the ad attributes to Rep. Jindal words that he merely quoted, and that were originally written centuries ago by a Protestant reformer. This ad should be outrageous to anyone, regardless of party affiliation, who abhors deceptive propaganda, character assassination, and the notion of religious litmus tests for holders of public office.Senator Landrieu, we ask that you, in your responsibility as a United States Senator and as a leader in the state of Louisiana , address this serious matter. Your state has a rich and diverse religious history, and continues to remain the home of millions of proud Louisianans of several creeds and cultures. The producers of this ad, it seems, are unaware that Lousiana, like the rest of the country, has resolved to put the days of religious intolerance and discrimination firmly in the past. They bring shame on your party and your state.

Simply put, it is shocking that we should still witness this degree of religious intolerance in America today. We ask that you demand the immediate retraction of this ad. We ask that you, not only on behalf of Catholic Americans, but also on behalf of all Americans who treasure truthfulness and respect for religious faith, denounce this religious bigotry in the political arena.
Sincerely,
Brian F. Burch
President
