Historic Day- Pope Makes His Anglican Move (Major Updates and Links)

I am a tad of our of pocket today but I will try to do some more updating on this entry throughout the day

It is huge. The Anchoress has a good entry and a lot of updated. See Pope: Anglicans, Liturgy, Welcome! UPDATED. A huge day that for some reason is not grabbing the secular headlines of the Cable News networks yet

Updates- I intend to pretty much post on this for the day so to keep it at the top.

I want to highlight this good Get Religion article The Anglican Communion did WHAT? (updated)

I wanted to highlight again the very good UK Telegraph Article New era begins as Benedict throws open gates of Rome to disaffected Anglicans I think the reason this was pulled off and not torpedoed by the usual suspects was that Vatican and the Pope kept the people in the circle small. I find this part pretty amazing:

Both Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Archbishop Rowan Williams are surprised by this dramatic move. Cardinal Levada, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was in Lambeth Palace only yesterday to spell out to Dr Williams what it means. This decision has, in effect, been taken over their heads – though there is no suggestion that Archbishop Nichols does not fully support this historic move.
Incidentally, I suspect that Rome waited until Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor’s retirement before unveiling this plan: the cardinal is an old-style ecumenist who represents the old way of doing things. His allies in Rome, and many former participants in Anglican-Catholic dialogue, are dismayed by today’s news, which clears away the wreckage of the ARCIC process.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is unlikely to be pleased, though he was vigorously concealing any displeasure at a press conference this morning. (There was a lot of spin about this decision “arising out of dialogue”.) The truth is that Rome has given up on the Anglican Communion. With one announcement, the Pope has given conservative Anglicans a protected route to union with Rome – and promised that, even once they are members of the Catholic Church, they will be offered a permanent structure that allows them to retain an Anglican ethos
.........

Oh dear it is appearing that the Archbishop of Canterbury is not happy and it appears the Pope told the forces in the Vatican to stick it

The UK Telegraph has
Archbishop of Canterbury criticises Rome for springing this announcement on him (That is what you get for springing Women Ordination on Us- How does it feel!! )

First, it’s world-wide. Second, the current pastoral provision places Anglican Use parishes under the local Latin Rite bishop (in some cases, “at his mercy” would be the correct phrasing). A separate authority structure, however it might work, is certainly a change. October 20, 9:30 am

The big deal is that while Anglican Church and ABC flounders in sea of indecision and without any apparent direction or vision, the Catholic Church just took action. If you are Anglo-Catholic and wondering what future you have in the Anglican Church this structure may be just what you have been waiting for to leave
.

Let me make this observation on something that is not exactly getting picked up. It is not like Anglican Church Parish X announces that they are going to Rome and the Catholic Bishop is there next week Confirming everyone. Just like any Catholic Convert if a individual has marriage / Divorce issue I think that has to be resolved on case by case basis

Midwest Conservative Journal has some blunt thoughts from the Anglican point of view at BOMBSHELL

American Episcopalians will get a giggle out of this because you get the joke. He comments
"Anybody else have a vision just now of Katharine Jefferts Schori jumping up and down and screaming, “He can’t do that!! Nicaea!! NICAEA!! NICAAAAAEEEEAAA!!” and then running away shrieking incoherently? Maybe it was just me".

in the comment section on that link
What no orthodox Anglican can deny is this: Benedict has shown far more pastoral concern for us than our own Archbishop. That is shameful, and a devastating judgment on Rowan Williams. I don’t care if you’re a Calvinist, Reformed, Arminian, Low-Church, High-Church, Anglo-Catholic, Tractarian or whatever you call yourself. The fact remains that Benedict cares for you and your spiritual health, and Rowan Williams does not. Q.E.D.

Well that is true isn't it? We are going to get in the Vatican Statement in a second but though the United States Episcopal Church was not named it was alluded too as causing the Vatican to take this step.

I am observing with amusement that some liberal Anglicans are going no big deal. More of the same? WHAT? I think they must be in shock. The Pope has now weighed in. This is more than just More of the same Pastoral Provision. There is a worldwide structure being set up here. That means Catholic Bishops worldwide can no longer sit on sidelines so not to upset the Anglican Bishop up the street. Liberal Catholics (who will not like this move for obvious reasons) know exactly what has happened.

Father Z has good links and Commentary. The U.S Bishops respond the bombshell since I guess they too just found out about it. See The USCCB reacts to the new Anglican situation

A few more updates. I shall be updating this post throughout the evenings. Needless this to say this has hit the American Catholic Bishops by surprise as well as the Catholic Press. Who knew Rome could still keep a secret like this under wraps for so long

Canterbury Tales has some info that is useful here.

Former Anglican Priest Now Catholic Priest Standing On My Head has a must read post He has a good article over at Inside Catholic on this.Another must read that pretty much sums it up.

A very good post here as the whole Canon law aspect of this and how it shows a trend in from the Vatican.

20 October 2009

A Roman Bombshell.
When it reigns, dear readers, it pours. Aside from the
normal purging of dissent by any means necessary, some pesky facts about the success of that "new thing" we're doing, and the occasional waxy emission from the intellectual deaf ear of our denomination, there hasn't been much in the way of news lately with respect to

The Episcopal Church (tm) and the Current Unpleasantness. But today, there was... this. Followed by... this. Kaboom.Wow. An actual Pope, looking for a way to offer the faithful a place at the table. Unlike our wannabe pope and her hench-persons, who are only looking to legitimize a political agenda and keep the trappings and riches for themselves. The faithful be damned.I'm going to Manresa in a few days for my annual retreat weekend. Is this a sign?

As a historian, I am in absolute awe of what the Holy Father did today. As an Episcopalian who longs to be welcomed into the Catholic Church for worship and communion, the implications for me, personally are unlimited.

I have no idea where all of this is going. This is a very brave new world lead by a very brave and holy man of God. What the Holy Father has done is up there with Martin Luther and Henry VIII.

Where it stops, I have no idea. I do know, though, I no longer feel like a "bastard" step-child.

I think you are right on

Basically though the are avoiding the "rite" or Chruch language like what the Eastern Catholics that are in communion with Rome have in a way it is similar.

basically Anglican Liturgy and tradition will have a protected place in the Catholic Church and when make the comment about "bastard step child" you are hitting something. As someone put it Pope Benedict has moved Anglo Catholics from a apartment to their own house which offers many more protections and rights.

Further for those that dont come over but decide to stay Anglcian these I think will give them a much more important trump card in the messy but necessary internal Chruch politics

PErsonally if one of these Anglo Catholic Churches were set up them me I would likely make that my Parish since I am a big lover fo the Anglcian Worship and Book of Common Prayer

That is a bold move but beware of the Catholic Church. I used to be Catholic but then I stopped practicing after I found out some disturbing truth. Some say the papacy is the antichrist. They changed the ten commandments which is the Law of God, the Pope claims to be a god, they have killed innocent people for centuries like the Spanish Inquisition and supporting the Nazis, and the priests have molested a lot of children. Jesus would not approve of any of these, it is not Christian, that is evil hiding behind religion. People really need to open their eyes. I know I did!!!
